Maree

Maree

Born in Motueka, Maree grew up on a tobacco farm in Riwaka spending much of her younger years exploring the Abel Tasman from their family bach in Stilwell Bay.

She left New Zealand at 18, travelling extensively overseas. On her return she joined the NZ Police. With husband Ken she now runs Riwaka Retreat, self contained accomodation just out of Motueka.

Very much an outdoors person, Maree set up Abel Tasman Tours & Guided Walks in late 1999 to share her love of the Tasman area and its beautiful national parks.

Ken

Ken has lived in the Abel Tasman area for over 35 years. A builder by trade, he now assists Maree with the guided walks and has a sound knowledge of both the Inland and Coastal Tracks of the Abel Tasman National Park.

He is an avid recreational fisherman with most of his leisure time spent at the family bach or off the coast of the Abel Tasman in his 4.9m stabicraft.

Briar

Briar has returned to the Abel Tasman area from Christchurch, arriving shortly after the big earthquake. Having been a 'city girl' for six years she is welcoming the opportunity to again get into the outdoors of our beautiful district.

With a BSc and an outdoors refresher course under her belt, she is now assisting with the family business and is enjoying meeting different nationalities and sharing her love of the Abel Tasman. One of four children she is a fifth generation local and has been brought up hiking the hills of the Abel Tasman National Park and boating and fishing off its shores with her mum and dad.

CONGRATULATIONS Briar on being accepted on the Doc Ranger Course. Even more so for getting the coveted placement on Cod Fish Island working with the Kakapo. We will miss you this summer.

"The trip as such was exactly what we expected and a lot more. Great weather and even greater scenery. Very lovely treats like homemade muffins and an extra bag of kiwis created a familiar atmosphere(as well as taking us to your beautiful house at the beach). Thanks for 3 awesome days - our wonderful guide and Maree." J Simon, Irina, and Thomas, Germany, June 2011. Abel Tasman Guided Walks & Accommodation

"The accommodations are very clean and comfortable. We loved our two days of hiking with Ken. The views were beautiful and we liked learning about the NZ environment. Ken and Maree are lovely hosts. Thank you!" Luis & Lesley, USA, Oct 2011. Abel Tasman Guided Walks & Accommodation

"A quite beautiful walk enhanced by Ken's local knowledge and the exclusive bach - I want it! A treat to be organised and entertained by Ken and Maree!" Chris & Amanda, UK, Feb 2010.

"Enjoyed the ferry ride past the seals. Had the company of Ken and Briar who were terrific. Great place for lunch at Bark Bay. Really good walk, and home to Maree's whitebait patties. Couldn't ask for more." Julie & Carl, Australia, Oct 2010.
